Coby Kyros 7015 Honeycomb 2.1 update

I stumbled upon this firmware update, created by tipstir, the other day and had to check it out.  It is simply an update for the Kyros that adds Honycomb features to the And4roid 2.1 installed on the tablet.  All in all it looks good and even seems to help the device function a little better with a few apps that are added.   First lets start with how it looks.  I used their pics of the interface because mine turned out poorly.

As you can tell the menu bar at the top has changed.  The volume, WIFI, battery Icon, and the black menu bar change the overall appearance of the interface.  It also have a Honeycomb launcher, which I don’t really care for.  I still use Launcher Pro, it has smoother scrolling and more options to customize the interface.  Here is a list of feature the update has.  It is quite a list.

INSTALLATION

Installing the update is pretty easy.  You will need Clockworkmod installed to install this update.  So make a backup before you start. Then copy the update file to your sdcard, usually to the root of the card to make it easier to find.  Then follow the steps below.

  1. So boot into recovery holding the power button and the back button.
  2. Go to advanced
  3. clear the dalvik cache
  4. clear the battery status
  5. You may want to clear your personal data as well, I didn’t
  6. Go to select install zip from sdcard
  7. select update file
  8. Reboot when finished

Once it comes up it will take a little while the first time.  You will see a Honeycomb style animation.

I like it and have installed launcher pro, which increases the look and screen performance.  But you can use any launcher you want.  It has several new wallpapers and apps as well.  It gives you a new look and feel to the overall experience with the Kyros.    I have setup the task killer to kill tasks every 30 minutes except the ones I always want to run and have a battery app that turns of the WIFI when it goes to sleep and turn the screen brightness down to 50%. It has increased my battery life. I would recommend this to anyone.  However you do this at your own risk, but I have had no problems at this time.  The install went smooth and I have had no force closes.    So if you are willing install it, you wont be sorry.

Current update file is: 5.19.11 HCV13.0 B20FM or 5.19.11 HCV13.0 B20FHD for HDMI support

Xda developers also have a post on this update at this LINK.

This is actually a patch that runs on top of you Android 2.1 OS. You will need to recover to a backup. If you have no backups and the stock recovery, you will need to reinstall the Coby update.zip file. You are stuck in a boot loop and there are a few other ways to recover but they are harder to do. If you need more help with the process just let me know.

Thanks a lot for the help. I’ve been posting in some Coby Forums, but get no response on these questions. If you have time, could you answer this general question.

I’ve been reading a lot of posts everywhere. I want to do GingerBread or HoneyComb, but don’t understand the advantages pros/cons of each to make the decision.

What is the difference between GingerBread and HoneyComb?

And I thought I saw a post of HoneyComb running on top of GingerBread – if so, what is GingerBread without HoneyComb?

I’m looking for speed, space for apps., and app compatibility.

    Info./advice would be appreicated.

    Thanks,
Brent – Running MID7015A 2.1 Updated and ROOTED

    1. If I want to go back to the way it was before Honeycomb, can I just restore the Clockworkmod backup I made before? Yes you can just restore a backup and you will be back to Android 2.1 without the patch.

    2. If I install the Full version and there are apps I don’t want, can I uninstall them as normal?
Yes you can uninstall any apps you don’t want but you may need to get a uninstall app for some of the apps that may be installed.

    3. Can I still use other apps not on the install, from Market?
Yes you just have to have the check the allow unknown source in the settings to install apps but that may not be the case with all of them.

    4. Does it do anything to increase the current 261M of space that is available to install apps.
It doesn’t change this. It is still Android 2.1. If you want an over all better firmware read up on upgrading to Android 2.3.1, it really makes the Kyros function better.

I have few questions if you don’t mind.

    1. If I want to go back to the way it was before Honeycomb, can I just restore the Clockworkmod backup I made before?

    2. If I install the Full version and there are apps I don’t want, can I uninstall them as normal?

    3. Can I still use other apps not on the install, from Market?

    4. Does it do anything to increase the current 261M of space that is available to install apps.

    Thanks for your help.
